The unique Oltrarno – Florence

Oltrarno, or Diladdarno in the dialect of Florence, is the area situated on the left side of the river Arno.

How to visit the Oltrarno?

The best way to visit and discover the “other Florence” is on foot. Just cross one of the four bridges above the Arno: Ponte alla Carraia, Ponte Santa Trinita, Ponte Vecchio or Ponte alle Grazie. You will find yourself in two famous neighborhoods of the Oltrarno: Santo Spirito and San Frediano.

You will notice that in this part of the city, there is still a strong attachment to traditions and old professions. But beyond the tradition, as per the Rive Gauche in Paris, the Oltrarno is considered a meeting place for intellectuals, artists and bohemiens. That’s why turists choose to stay in these neighborhoods because of their genuineness and vivacity.

What to see?

The historic city centre of Florence is not te only part where you can find important and well-known sights. In Oltrarno there are also monuments, gardens, museums and unparalleled palaces as: Palazzo Pitti, the cathedral of Santo Spirito, Boboli and Bardini’s Gardens and add to the mix the numerous workshops you can find along your way.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is also situated on the other part of the river and it represents one of the main changes made to this part of the city. The Oltrarno due its popularity to the Medici family who made it an obligatory area for the nobility since 1550 and the creation of new palaces had contributed to renovate the image of the Oltrarno.

But you can do more than just a visit to the beautiful museums and gardens, we suggest you to spend an entire day in Santo Spirito discrict  where during the day it is livened up by the morning markets and at night the square turns into a meeting place for the movida, just stay with friends sitting in the square while eating or drinking something.
