Meet your guide in Florence!
This month we want to introduce you to Vanessa, a very young and energetic guide on Italy Segway Tours’ team but also a knowledgeable and engaging young woman.
Name: Hello! I’m Vanessa Garau!
Nationality and City of residence: I’m Italian and I live just 15 minutes out from the center of Florence, in a place called Sesto Fiorentino ( “sesto” literally means sixth, it comes from the fact that in roman times the village in here was sixth miles from the city center of Florentia –Florence-)
Name of tour you lead and where: Ha! I lead many tours! Segway tour, Bike tour, food walking tour, Duomo tours, beer tour… you name one!
If you are not from the city you are based in for tours, what originally brought you there? Actually I was born in Florence and I’ve spent my whole life here!
Your favorite part of the tour: The faces of people that step on the segway for the first time! In the beginning they find it weird, unstable and sometimes even scary. After 5 minutes of practice their facial expression is completed different, they start feeling confident on the Segway and you can tell that they truly love it by the smile spreading on their faces!
Favorite Local Restaurant in your city: As every Italian, I love to eat! It’s hard for me to choose just one restaurant to suggest since different place are specialized on different dishes! Great restaurants are located around Santo Spirito Square – in the Oltrarno area – which is definitely one of my favourite place in Florence where to hang out with my friends!
One thing visitors to my city can’t miss: The view of Piazzale Michelangelo!! If you want I can take you up there by bike on the Sunset Bike Tour, definitely the best time of the day to admire the sight!
Travel Mantra? When you travel you have the chance to improve your mind. Learn how to live the present, relax your mind and live emotion with your heart!
What’s next on your travel bucket list? Since I’ve been four times already to USA and South America, I would love to go now to visit Asia, I’ve never traveled to that side of the word: Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Australia, New Zeland…I’ll probably need more then just one trip!
What is your favorite Italian city to travel to? My heart is divided between two places in Italy: the first one, of course, is in Florence. The other one is in Sardinia – a region south of Italy – where my father was born. Sardinia is the biggest Italian island and it’s a real paradise, especially if you love the sea as much as I do!
What’s the food that someone must try in your city before leaving? One of the most amazing dish of the Florentine tradition is the t-bone steak! If instead you prefer pasta, try the pappardelle al cinghiale (past with wild boar). Both of this foods are greatly matched by a glass of Chianti wine. For all vegetarian a local specialty to try is the pappa al pomodoro or also ribollita, You can find description and ingredients of both dishes on our food blog Italy Food Culture.
What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had on one of your tours? One of the most memorable experience I had was during a segway tour and also not too long ago. We had this famous American tv show filming an episode in Florence and they decided to also take part in a Segway tour and I was the one in charge to take them around the city! So the troupe came with big professional camera and microphone, they also interviewed me! It has been a real unique experience: I felt like a star for one day!
What do you like most about leading tours? The best part is to make people enjoy my city, to let them know its history, art, its importance, its beauty!
What makes your tour unique? I think all people are different, as all tour guides are. I think my clients enjoy spending their time with me because of my passion for “my” Florence as well as the energy I try to give them all the time!
So now you know who Vanessa is, are you ready to take a tour with her?
Till next time!
